Gatorade

Gatorade is a brand of sports drinks formulated to replenish fluids and electrolytes and provide carbohydrates during physical activity.

Sports drink: A beverage designed to replace fluids and, often, electrolytes or carbohydrates lost or used during exercise. Gatorade is a prominent commercial example of this beverage category.
University of Florida: A public research university in Gainesville, Florida, founded in 1853. Researchers there developed the original drink for the university's football team.
Endurance exercise: Physical activity sustained over an extended period, relying heavily on aerobic energy production. Carbohydrate-containing drinks can help supply fuel during long-duration exertion.
Low-calorie sports drink: A sports beverage formulated with little or no sugar, often using noncaloric sweeteners. It supplies fluid and electrolytes with less carbohydrate than standard Gatorade.
Electrolyte: A substance that forms electrically charged ions when dissolved in water. Sodium and other electrolytes in Gatorade help replace minerals lost in sweat.
Florida Gators: The athletic teams representing the University of Florida. The drink's name and first intended users came from the university's Gators football team.
Exercise-associated hyponatremia: Dangerously low blood sodium during or after prolonged exercise, often involving excess fluid intake. Sports drinks do not prevent this condition if fluid intake exceeds losses.
Energy drink: A beverage marketed to increase alertness or energy, commonly containing caffeine and other stimulants. Energy drinks target stimulation, whereas Gatorade primarily targets fluid and electrolyte replacement.
Sodium: A chemical element whose ions help regulate fluid balance and support nerve and muscle function. Sodium is a principal electrolyte in Gatorade formulations.
Robert Cade: An American physician and kidney researcher who led the University of Florida team that created Gatorade. Cade directed the research behind the drink's original formulation.
