Gauche effect

The preference of certain molecules for a gauche conformation over an anti conformation. Hyperconjugative orbital interactions and electrostatic effects can contribute to this preference.

Hyperconjugation: An interaction in which electrons in one bond or lone pair delocalize into a neighboring antibonding orbital. Donation from C–H bonds into C–F antibonding orbitals can stabilize gauche 1,2-difluoroethane.
