Gaza City

Gaza City is the largest city in the Gaza Strip and a major Palestinian population and cultural center on the eastern Mediterranean coast.

Tell es-Sakan: An archaeological site south of Gaza City with remains of an Early Bronze Age settlement. Its excavated remains trace urban settlement in the Gaza region thousands of years ago.
Gaza Strip: A narrow coastal territory on the eastern Mediterranean bordered by Israel and Egypt. Gaza City is the Strip’s largest urban center, but the two are not interchangeable.
Yasser Arafat: A Palestinian political leader who chaired the Palestine Liberation Organization and led the Palestinian National Authority. His return to Gaza in 1994 marked the Authority’s establishment there.

Hamas: A Palestinian Islamist political and militant organization founded in 1987. Hamas has governed Gaza since 2007, shaping the city’s political conditions.
Al-Shifa Hospital: The largest hospital complex in the Gaza Strip, located in Gaza City. Its capacity and condition have major consequences for healthcare across the Strip.
Six-Day War: The 1967 Arab–Israeli war in which Israel captured the Gaza Strip, West Bank, East Jerusalem, and other territories. Israeli occupation after the war changed governance and daily life in Gaza City.
