Gdańsk

Gdańsk is a port city on the Baltic Sea in northern Poland, historically known in German as Danzig. Its maritime trade and shifting political status shaped its history.

Gdańsk Pomerania: A historical region around Gdańsk on the southern Baltic coast. The city’s regional setting connected it to competing Polish and Pomeranian powers.
Battle of Westerplatte: A battle fought from 1 to 7 September 1939 at a Polish military depot in the Free City of Danzig. The assault near the city marked one of the first battles of the Second World War.

Gdańsk Agreement: An agreement signed in August 1980 between Poland’s communist government and striking workers in Gdańsk. The agreement legalized independent trade unions after the shipyard strikes.
Baltic Sea: A shallow, brackish sea in northern Europe, connected to the North Sea through the Danish straits. Gdańsk’s position on the Baltic gives it access to regional and international shipping routes.
Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers of 1970: A Gdańsk monument commemorating workers killed during protests against the Polish government in December 1970. The monument gives public form to the city’s memory of state violence against workers.
Gdynia: A Polish port city built in the twentieth century near Gdańsk. Poland developed Gdynia as a major seaport when access through Danzig was politically uncertain.
