Geʽez script

Geʽez script is an abugida used for Geʽez and several modern Ethiopian and Eritrean languages. Its consonant-based characters change shape to represent different vowel sounds.

Abugida: A writing system in which consonant letters carry an inherent vowel that changes through added marks or altered forms. Geʽez script is a prominent example of this writing-system type.
Amharic: A Semitic language spoken chiefly in Ethiopia and written with Geʽez script. Amharic uses an expanded character inventory suited to its sounds.
South Arabian alphabet: An ancient consonantal writing system used in South Arabia and influential in the region's early scripts. Geʽez script developed from a South Arabian writing tradition.
Geʽez language: An ancient Semitic language of the Horn of Africa that survives chiefly as a liturgical language. The script's name and earliest literary use are closely tied to Geʽez.
