Geiger–Nuttall law

The Geiger–Nuttall law is an empirical relationship linking an alpha particle’s energy to its parent nucleus’s decay constant or half-life. Higher-energy alpha particles generally correspond to shorter half-lives.

Alpha decay: A radioactive decay process in which a nucleus emits a helium-4 nucleus. The law describes how alpha-particle energy relates to the rate of this decay.
Hans Geiger: A German physicist known for developing radiation detectors and studying radioactive decay. His measurements of alpha emitters helped establish the empirical relationship.
Decay constant: The probability per unit time that an individual unstable nucleus will decay. It is one of the decay-rate quantities directly related to alpha energy.
Alpha spectroscopy: The measurement and analysis of the energies of alpha particles emitted by radioactive sources. Measured alpha energies can be compared with expected decay rates using the law.
Viola–Seaborg equation: A semi-empirical formula estimating alpha-decay half-lives from decay energy and nuclear charge. It extends the Geiger–Nuttall pattern with charge-dependent terms for broader predictions.
Quantum tunneling: A quantum process that allows a particle to cross a barrier despite lacking enough classical energy. Alpha particles escape the Coulomb barrier by tunneling, making decay rates highly energy-sensitive.
John Mitchell Nuttall: A British physicist who studied radioactive transformations and alpha-particle ranges. His collaboration with Geiger produced the relationship’s original formulation.
Alpha particle: A helium-4 nucleus consisting of two protons and two neutrons. Its kinetic energy is the measurable quantity used in the law.
Radioactive dating: The estimation of material ages from measured abundances of radioactive isotopes and their decay products. The law helps characterize alpha-emitting isotopes used in some dating systems.
Nuclear fission: The splitting of a heavy atomic nucleus into lighter nuclei, often releasing neutrons and energy. It is a competing decay pathway in some heavy nuclei, not the alpha emission described by the law.
