Geminal

Geminal describes two atoms or groups attached to the same atom in a molecule. The term distinguishes this arrangement from substituents attached to neighboring atoms.

Chemical bond: An attractive interaction that holds atoms or ions together in molecules and solids. A geminal relationship is defined by two groups sharing an atom through chemical bonds.
Vicinal: Describes two atoms or groups attached to neighboring atoms in a molecule. Vicinal groups occupy adjacent atoms rather than sharing one atom.
Geminal dihalide: An organic compound with two halogen atoms attached to the same carbon atom. It is a direct, common example of geminal substitution.
Inductive effect: The transmission of electron-density changes through sigma bonds due to electronegativity differences. Geminal substituents can jointly alter electron density at their shared attachment atom.
Molecular structure: The arrangement of atoms and bonds in a molecule, including its geometry and connectivity. Geminal identifies a specific connectivity pattern within molecular structures.
1,3-Relationship: A relationship between groups attached to atoms separated by one intervening atom. This spacing contrasts with the shared attachment atom in a geminal relationship.
Geminal diol: A compound with two hydroxyl groups attached to the same carbon atom. Its paired hydroxyl groups share one carbon, defining a geminal arrangement.
Hyperconjugation: Electron delocalization involving overlap between a sigma bond and an adjacent orbital. Geminal substitution can change the neighboring bonds and orbitals available for hyperconjugation.
Substituent: An atom or group of atoms that replaces hydrogen or attaches to a parent structure. Geminal groups are substituents attached to one shared atom.
Cis–trans isomerism: Stereoisomerism caused by restricted rotation, producing distinct same-side and opposite-side arrangements. Cis–trans describes spatial arrangement across a bond, not shared-atom connectivity.
