Gender : Gender comprises identities, roles, expressions, and social meanings associated with masculinity, femininity, or other categories. The binary is one way societies organize gender.
Nonbinary gender : Gender identities that are not exclusively male or female. It names identities that the binary cannot represent as either category alone.
Gender policing : The social enforcement of norms about how people should present or behave according to gender. It pressures people to remain legible within the binary’s expected roles.
Sex–gender distinction : The conceptual distinction between bodily sex classifications and socially shaped gender roles or identities. It helped separate gender norms from claims about bodily difference.
Cisnormativity : The assumption that everyone is, or should be, cisgender and that cisgender identities are normal. Binary institutions often assume assigned sex and gender identity must align.
