Generation X

Generation X is the generation commonly defined in the United States as people born from 1965 to 1980. Its members came of age amid economic restructuring, changing family patterns, and the spread of personal computing.

MTV: An American cable television network launched in 1981, initially centered on music videos. Its early music-video programming helped define popular culture during Generation X’s adolescence.
Douglas Coupland: A Canadian novelist whose 1991 novel popularized the label Generation X. His novel helped turn an existing generational label into a widely recognized cultural name.
Generation: A group of people linked by birth period, shared historical experiences, or kinship position. This broader idea distinguishes demographic generations from family generations.
Baby bust: A sustained decline in birth rates, especially the drop in United States births after the postwar baby boom. The cohort’s smaller size relative to the baby boom shaped its demographic position.

Latchkey children: Children who regularly returned to homes without an adult present, often because caregivers were working. The experience became a prominent shorthand for changing family and work patterns in Generation X’s childhood.
Slacker: A cultural archetype associated with disengagement from conventional career ambition and social expectations. The label captured a media stereotype often attached to young adults in this generation.
Baby boomers: A generation associated with the surge in births after World War II, commonly dated 1946–1964 in the United States. Generation X is commonly defined as the cohort following this postwar generation.
