Generation

A generation is a level of descent in a family lineage, measured from one set of parents to their children. It can also describe people born and living during roughly the same period.

Genealogy: The study and tracing of family lineages and relationships. Genealogical records organize ancestors and descendants into successive generations.
Lineal descent: Descent traced directly from an ancestor to a descendant through parent-child relationships. Each step in a line of descent leads to the next generation.
Family tree: A diagram representing family relationships across multiple generations. Its branches show how generations connect through parent-child links.
Generation (sociology): A group defined by shared birth period and formative historical experiences. Sociological generations describe cohorts, not positions in a family lineage.
Parent: A person or organism that produces or raises offspring. A parent and child occupy adjacent generations in a lineage.
Collateral relative: A relative who shares an ancestor but is not in the direct line of descent. Siblings and cousins may belong to the same generation without descending from one another.
Inheritance: The transmission of property, rights, or traits from one person or generation to another. Inheritance follows family lines and can pass between generations.
Age cohort: A group of people born during the same period or sharing a life-course stage. An age cohort can span many unrelated families and does not require shared ancestry.
Descendant: A person or organism descended from a particular ancestor. Descendants extend a family line through later generations.
Cousin relationship: A kinship relationship between descendants of siblings or more distant shared ancestors. Cousin degree depends on how many generations separate each person from their common ancestor.
