Genetic admixture

Genetic admixture is the mixing of genetic lineages when individuals from previously separated populations interbreed. It produces descendants with ancestry from more than one source population.

Local ancestry inference: The estimation of the ancestral source population for particular genomic segments in an admixed individual. It identifies which source population contributed each segment of an admixed genome.
Population genetics: The study of genetic variation within and between populations and how it changes over time. It supplies the models used to describe lineage mixing and its genetic consequences.
Admixture mapping: A genetic association method that uses ancestry differences within admixed populations to locate disease-related variants. It exploits variation in local ancestry to search for disease-associated genomic regions.
Introgression: The incorporation of genetic material from one species or differentiated population into another through hybridization and backcrossing. It is a specific form of gene transfer, often involving repeated backcrossing.
Linkage disequilibrium: The nonrandom association of alleles at different genetic loci in a population. Recent admixture creates ancestry correlations across loci that recombination gradually breaks down.
Gene flow: The transfer of genetic variants between populations through migration and reproduction. Interbreeding between separated populations is a form of gene flow.
Pharmacogenomics: The study of how genetic variation affects a person's response to medicines. Admixed populations can reveal ancestry-linked variation relevant to drug response.
Hybridization: Reproduction between individuals from genetically distinct populations, varieties, or species. It describes the mating event, whereas admixture describes resulting population ancestry patterns.
Genetic recombination: The exchange and reshuffling of DNA segments during meiosis, generating new combinations of genetic variants. Recombination shortens ancestry segments inherited from source populations over generations.
Population structure: The organization of genetic variation into subgroups within a population, often reflecting limited mating or shared history. Admixture changes patterns of genetic differentiation among population groups.
