Geneva Conference

The 1954 international conference in Geneva produced agreements ending the First Indochina War and temporarily divided Vietnam, while failing to settle Korea’s division.

Geneva Accords: The 1954 agreements that ended the First Indochina War and established a temporary military division of Vietnam. These agreements were the conference’s central outcome for Indochina.
First Indochina War: A war from 1946 to 1954 between France and Vietnamese forces seeking independence. The conference negotiated the ceasefire that ended this war.
Battle of Dien Bien Phu: A decisive 1954 battle in which Viet Minh forces defeated French forces in northwestern Vietnam. The French defeat immediately preceded the conference and increased pressure for a settlement.
Pierre Mendès France: French prime minister in 1954 who pledged to seek a settlement in Indochina within thirty days. His government drove France toward negotiations after Dien Bien Phu.

Zhou Enlai: Chinese premier and foreign minister who played a leading diplomatic role at the 1954 Geneva Conference. He brokered compromises among communist and noncommunist participants.
Korean Armistice Agreement: The 1953 armistice that halted fighting in the Korean War without reunifying Korea. It had already stopped combat in Korea, while Geneva’s 1954 Korean talks achieved no political settlement.
