Genghis Khan

Genghis Khan (c. 1162–1227) founded the Mongol Empire by uniting Mongol tribes and leading campaigns that reshaped much of Asia.

Temüjin: Temüjin was the birth name of Genghis Khan before he received the title in 1206. His early alliances and victories transformed Temüjin into the ruler later known as Genghis Khan.
Mongol military tactics: Mongol military tactics combined mobility, disciplined formations, intelligence, and coordinated deception. These methods helped Genghis Khan defeat larger and more settled opponents.
Mongolian plateau: The Mongolian Plateau is a highland region of Central and East Asia that includes much of present-day Mongolia. Its grasslands and harsh climate formed the setting for Temüjin’s early life and political rise.
Mongol conquest of Khwarezmia: The Mongol conquest of Khwarezmia was a campaign against the Central Asian empire from 1219 to 1221. The campaign followed a diplomatic crisis and brought much of Central Asia under Mongol control.
Börte: Börte was Genghis Khan’s principal wife and a political figure in the early Mongol Empire. Her abduction and recovery became a pivotal episode in Temüjin’s early life.
Mongol bow: The Mongol bow was a compact composite bow suited to mounted archery. It gave mounted troops substantial range and power without sacrificing mobility.
Mongol tribes: Mongol tribes were pastoral groups of the eastern steppe connected by shifting alliances and rivalries. Temüjin’s unification of these groups supplied the foundation of his power.
Mongol invasion of the Jin dynasty: The Mongol invasion of the Jin dynasty was a prolonged 13th-century war in northern China. Genghis Khan began the campaigns that weakened the Jin state and opened northern China to Mongol rule.
Jamukha: Jamukha was a Mongol leader and Temüjin’s former ally who became his rival. Their competition shows how personal alliances shaped the struggle to unite the Mongols.
Mongol Empire: The Mongol Empire was a Eurasian empire founded in the 13th century and expanded by Genghis Khan and his successors. It was the political structure created by his unification and conquests.
