Caffa : A major Genoese trading city on the Crimean coast of the Black Sea, now called Feodosia. It became the network’s chief Black Sea entrepôt and a center of trade with the Eurasian interior.
Republic of Genoa : A medieval and early modern maritime republic centered on the city of Genoa in northwestern Italy. Its government and merchants established, negotiated, and defended the overseas possessions.
Chios : A Greek island in the eastern Aegean that was governed by Genoese interests from 1346 to 1566. The Maona of Chios turned the island into a durable Genoese commercial and political possession.
Silk Road : A network of overland and maritime routes that connected East Asia with western Asia, Europe, and North Africa. Genoese ports linked Black Sea shipping to routes carrying goods between Eurasia and the Mediterranean.
Venetian colonies : Overseas possessions and trading bases established or controlled by the Republic of Venice. Venetian holdings competed with Genoese settlements for routes, markets, and strategic ports.
Pera : A Genoese district and trading settlement opposite Constantinople, now part of Istanbul’s Beyoğlu district. Its position across the Golden Horn connected Genoese commerce to the Byzantine capital.
Genoa–Venice War : A series of naval conflicts between the maritime republics of Genoa and Venice. Competition with Venice shaped Genoa’s pursuit of ports, privileges, and routes in the eastern Mediterranean.
Smyrna : A historic port city on the Aegean coast of Anatolia, now İzmir, Turkey. Genoese merchants held a fortified position there in the fourteenth century amid shifting regional powers.
Black Sea trade : The exchange of goods and services among communities around the Black Sea and with wider markets. Genoese colonies became prominent intermediaries in this regional trade.
Republic of Venice : A maritime republic centered on Venice that became a major commercial and naval power. Its institutions and eastern Mediterranean presence provided Genoa’s principal Italian rival.
