Genotype–phenotype correlation

Genotype–phenotype correlation describes how genetic differences relate to observable traits, including disease presence, features, and severity. These relationships can vary with genetic background and environmental influences.

Gene expression: The process by which information in a gene produces a functional RNA or protein. Differences in expression can change how strongly a genotype affects a trait.
Genotype: The genetic makeup of an organism or the genetic variants it carries at specified loci. It names the genetic information being compared with observed traits.
Clinical genetics: The medical specialty that diagnoses and manages conditions caused or influenced by genetic factors. Clinicians use genotype–phenotype relationships to interpret findings and guide care.
Phenylketonuria: An inherited metabolic disorder in which impaired phenylalanine breakdown can cause neurological harm without treatment. Its severity depends strongly on both PAH variants and dietary phenylalanine exposure.
Causal inference: Methods for determining whether an observed relationship reflects a cause-and-effect connection. A genotype–phenotype correlation alone does not establish that the genetic difference causes the trait.
Penetrance: The proportion of people with a particular genotype who display its associated phenotype. It captures why a disease-associated genotype may produce no visible disease in some carriers.
Phenotype: Observable or measurable characteristics of an organism arising from genetic and environmental influences. It names the traits and disease features whose relationship to genetic variation is studied.
Genotype–phenotype map: A representation linking genetic variants or genotypes to measured traits or phenotypes. Maps organize observed variant-to-trait relationships for analysis and interpretation.
Sickle cell disease: A group of inherited disorders caused by hemoglobin variants that can deform red blood cells. Different genotypes and modifying factors contribute to varied clinical severity.
Genetic determinism: The view that genes rigidly determine traits, largely independent of context and other influences. Observed correlations are probabilistic and often modified by background and environment.
