Genus

A taxonomic rank that groups related species and sits below family and above species. In binomial nomenclature, its name forms the first part of a species’ scientific name.

Species: A basic taxonomic rank grouping organisms considered to belong to the same kind. Species are the principal units grouped together within a genus.
Type genus: The genus that anchors the name of a zoological family group. It links a family-group name to a particular genus.
Monotypic genus: A genus containing only one recognized species. It shows that a genus need not contain multiple species.
DNA barcoding: A method that identifies organisms using short, standardized DNA sequences. Sequence comparisons can reveal whether specimens assigned to a genus are distinct lineages.
Family (biology): A taxonomic rank above genus and below order. A family contains one or more related genera.
Type species: The species permanently associated with the name of a genus. It fixes which taxonomic concept a genus name denotes.
Polytypic genus: A genus containing multiple recognized species. It represents the common situation in which several species share a genus.
Phylogenetics: The study of evolutionary relationships among organisms or genes. Phylogenetic evidence is commonly used to assess genus boundaries.
Binomial nomenclature: A system naming each species with a two-part name consisting of genus and specific epithet. The genus supplies the first word of each species’ binomial name.
Taxonomic rank: A level in a biological classification hierarchy, such as species, genus, or family. Genus is one rank among several nested levels.
