Geocentrism

Geocentrism is the belief or model that Earth is at the universe’s center and celestial bodies move around it. Its most influential mathematical form placed the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars on nested celestial spheres.

Ptolemaic system: An influential geocentric model that used deferents and epicycles to calculate the motions of celestial bodies. Its nested circles made geocentrism a predictive mathematical system.
Eudoxus of Cnidus: A fourth-century BCE Greek mathematician and astronomer who modeled planetary motion with nested rotating spheres. His homocentric spheres were an early mathematical attempt to preserve an Earth-centered cosmos.
Heliocentrism: The model that places the Sun at the center of the planetary system, with Earth orbiting it. It reverses geocentrism’s central claim about Earth’s position and motion.
Galileo Galilei: An Italian astronomer and natural philosopher who used telescopes to study the heavens in the early seventeenth century. His observations supplied evidence that challenged established geocentric interpretations.
Deferent and epicycle: A pair of circles used in ancient astronomy to model a planet’s changing position and speed against the stars. These circles reproduced retrograde motion without moving Earth.
Aristotle: An ancient Greek philosopher whose writings shaped Western thought on nature, motion, and the cosmos. His physics gave geocentrism a durable account of why Earth remained at rest.
Copernican system: The sixteenth-century astronomical model in which Earth rotates daily and orbits the Sun yearly. Copernicus offered a detailed alternative to Ptolemy while retaining circular planetary motion.
Phases of Venus: The changing illuminated appearance of Venus as seen from Earth during its orbit around the Sun. The full range of phases contradicted the traditional Ptolemaic arrangement of Venus.
Retrograde motion: The apparent reversal of a planet’s usual motion across the background stars. Geocentric astronomers treated this conspicuous pattern as a problem their models had to explain.
Hipparchus: A Greek astronomer of the second century BCE known for precise observations, star catalogues, and mathematical astronomy. His observations and techniques helped prepare the way for Ptolemy’s geocentric synthesis.
