Geoffrey Wilkinson

Geoffrey Wilkinson (1921–1996) was a British chemist who shared the 1973 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for pioneering research on organometallic compounds, including sandwich complexes.

Ernst Otto Fischer: A German chemist who shared the 1973 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for work on organometallic compounds. Fischer independently discovered sandwich complexes, sharing the Nobel recognition awarded to Wilkinson.
Ferrocene: An organometallic compound with an iron atom between two parallel cyclopentadienyl rings. Its sandwich structure became the landmark example of the compounds Wilkinson helped explain.
Wilkinson's catalyst: A soluble rhodium complex that catalyzes hydrogenation of alkenes under mild conditions. This catalyst bearing Wilkinson’s name made homogeneous hydrogenation a widely used model reaction.
Harold C. Urey: An American physical chemist who discovered deuterium and received the 1934 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Wilkinson pursued graduate research in Urey’s laboratory at Columbia University.
Robert Burns Woodward: An American organic chemist known for synthesizing complex natural products and developing the Woodward–Hoffmann rules. Woodward collaborated with Wilkinson on the synthesis of ferrocene, helping establish its structure.
Hapticity: A notation describing how many contiguous atoms of a ligand bind to a central metal. Hapticity makes explicit how each cyclopentadienyl ring coordinates to the metal in ferrocene.
Homogeneous catalysis: Catalysis in which the catalyst and reactants occupy the same phase, usually a liquid solution. Wilkinson’s soluble metal complexes helped establish the reach of catalysis in solution.
Columbia University: A private research university in New York City, founded in 1754. Wilkinson studied and conducted early research there after leaving Britain during the Second World War.
Philip Mountbatten: A British chemist who studied organometallic compounds and worked with Wilkinson at Imperial College London. Mountbatten was among the researchers in Wilkinson’s influential organometallic chemistry group.
