A geologic province is a region distinguished from surrounding areas by its rocks, structures, geologic history, or dominant processes.

Stratigraphy: The study of rock layers and their relationships, used to reconstruct geological history. Distinctive rock sequences help separate one province from its neighbors.
Basin and Range Province: A western North American region of alternating mountain ranges and sediment-filled basins formed by crustal extension. Its distinctive extensional landscape and structures define a recognizable province.
Mineral exploration: The search for economically valuable mineral deposits using geological, geochemical, and geophysical evidence. Province boundaries can identify regions with shared mineral-forming histories.
