Taconic orogeny: A Paleozoic mountain-building episode caused by collision and subduction along Laurentia’s eastern margin. Its Ordovician deformation built an early Appalachian mountain belt.
Fold-and-thrust belt: A region where compression folds rock layers and moves them along low-angle thrust faults. These structures dominate the Valley and Ridge province.
Appalachian basin: A long-lived sedimentary basin containing Paleozoic strata along the Appalachian Mountains’ western side. Its layered deposits record erosion of rising Appalachian mountains.

Blue Ridge Province: A mountainous Appalachian region containing ancient crystalline basement and metamorphosed rocks. Its exposed rocks reveal both old continental crust and later tectonic deformation.
Reading Prong: A narrow belt of ancient crystalline rocks extending through Pennsylvania into New Jersey. Its old basement rocks contrast with younger sedimentary strata nearby.
Marcellus Formation: A Devonian shale unit beneath parts of the Appalachian Basin, rich in natural gas. Its burial and structure made it a major unconventional gas reservoir.
