Geometric measure theory

Geometric measure theory uses measure and integration to study geometric objects, especially irregular sets, surfaces, and limits of geometric sequences.

Hausdorff measure: A measure that assigns size to sets using coverings by sets of arbitrarily small diameter. It extends length, area, and volume to irregular and fractional-dimensional sets.
Weak convergence of measures: Convergence in which measures approach one another through their integrals against continuous test functions. It lets sequences of geometric mass converge even when their supports change shape.
Finite-perimeter set: A measurable set whose indicator function has a distributional derivative that is a finite vector-valued measure. It generalizes smooth regions with finite boundary area and supports rigorous perimeter minimization.
Herbert Federer: An American mathematician whose work helped establish geometric measure theory as a modern field. His treatise and results systematized the subject's core definitions and theorems.
Differential geometry: The study of smooth manifolds and geometric structures using calculus. It describes smooth surfaces directly, while geometric measure theory also handles nonsmooth limits.
Lebesgue measure: The standard measure of length, area, and volume on Euclidean spaces, extended to a broad class of sets. It supplies the measure-theoretic framework used to integrate over geometric sets.
Federer–Fleming compactness theorem: A compactness theorem giving convergent subsequences of integral currents under bounds on mass and boundary mass. It is a central tool for extracting geometric limits from bounded families of currents.
Caccioppoli set: A measurable set with locally finite perimeter, defined through the bounded variation of its indicator function. These sets are the admissible regions in many geometric and variational problems.
Wendell Fleming: An American mathematician known for foundational work on currents and compactness in geometric measure theory. His joint compactness theorem with Federer underpins existence arguments for minimizing currents.
Algebraic topology: The study of topological spaces through algebraic invariants such as homology and cohomology. It tracks qualitative shape, whereas geometric measure theory also quantifies area and mass.
