Geonim

The Geonim were heads of the Babylonian Talmudic academies of Sura and Pumbedita, serving as leading Jewish legal and intellectual authorities from roughly the seventh through eleventh centuries.

Sura Academy: A Babylonian Jewish academy that became a major center for Talmudic study and leadership. Its head held the title of Gaon and answered legal questions from distant communities.
Gaon: The title held by the heads of the Babylonian academies during the Geonic era. Geonim is the plural of this title, which marked each academy head’s office.
Savoraim: Rabbinic scholars traditionally associated with editing and clarifying the Babylonian Talmud after the Amoraim. Their era preceded the Geonim and formed part of the transition to institutional leadership.
Jewish diaspora: The dispersed Jewish populations living outside the historic land of Israel. The Geonim’s influence depended on connections among communities spread across distant regions.
Pumbedita Academy: A Babylonian Jewish academy renowned for Talmudic scholarship and communal authority. Its Gaon was the other principal center of authority alongside Sura.

Karaite Judaism: A Jewish religious movement that rejects the binding authority of rabbinic tradition alongside scripture. Karaite challenges pressed the Geonim to defend rabbinic interpretations and legal authority.
Responsa: Written answers by Jewish legal authorities to questions about law and practice. Questions sent to the academies and the Geonim’s replies carried their rulings across Jewish communities.
Amoraim: Rabbinic scholars who interpreted the Mishnah and contributed to the Jerusalem and Babylonian Talmuds. Their Talmudic discussions became the principal inherited material studied by the Geonim.
