Geopolitics studies how location, terrain, resources, and spatial relationships shape political power and relations among states.

Strategic depth: The distance and space a state has to absorb an attack before vital areas are threatened. Distance from borders can give states time and room to resist invasion.
Friedrich Ratzel: A German geographer whose work helped establish political geography in the late nineteenth century. His organic conception of the state influenced early geopolitical theories.
Geopolitical risk: The possibility that political conflict or state action will disrupt economic activity or security. It applies geographic and political analysis to assess disruptions facing governments and firms.
Environmental determinism: The view that the physical environment determines human societies and their development. Geopolitics examines geographic influence without requiring geography to dictate political outcomes.
Chokepoint: A narrow route whose control can constrain movement between larger regions. Control of maritime and land chokepoints can give states leverage over trade and military access.
Alfred Thayer Mahan: A United States naval officer and historian who argued that sea power shaped national influence. His account made maritime routes and naval strength central to geopolitical strategy.
Energy security: The reliable and affordable availability of energy supplies. Pipelines, shipping lanes, and resource concentration make energy security geographically sensitive.
Possibilism: The view that the environment offers possibilities that human societies choose among. It stresses human choice where geopolitical accounts may emphasize spatial constraints.
Natural resource: A material occurring in nature that people can use, including fuels, minerals, and freshwater. Uneven resource distribution can create dependencies, rivalries, and bargaining power.
Halford Mackinder: A British geographer who proposed that control of Eurasia’s interior could confer global power. His Heartland thesis became one of geopolitics’ most influential spatial arguments.
