Georg Ohm

Georg Ohm was a German physicist whose experiments established the relationship among voltage, current, and resistance now known as Ohm’s law.

Alessandro Volta: Italian physicist Alessandro Volta invented the voltaic pile, an early electric battery. Volta’s battery gave Ohm a steady source for studying electric currents.
Galvanic cell: A galvanic cell converts chemical energy into electrical energy through spontaneous redox reactions. Ohm needed a sustained electrical source to compare currents under controlled conditions.
Ohm’s law: Ohm’s law states that voltage across a conductor equals current through it multiplied by its resistance, under suitable conditions. This circuit relationship is the central result associated with Ohm’s research.
Non-ohmic conductor: A non-ohmic conductor has a voltage-current relationship that is not linear under the conditions considered. Such conductors show where Ohm’s proportional relationship does not apply.
André-Marie Ampère: French physicist André-Marie Ampère helped establish electrodynamics as a field of physics. Ampère’s contemporary work helped define the emerging science of electric circuits.
Torsion balance: A torsion balance measures small forces by the twisting of a suspended fiber. Ohm adapted a torsion-based instrument to detect magnetic effects from electric currents.
Ohm: The ohm is the SI unit of electrical resistance, equal to one volt per ampere. The resistance unit bears Ohm’s name in recognition of his work.
Ohmic contact: An ohmic contact is an electrical junction with a linear, low-resistance voltage-current relationship. Its name is related, but it denotes a device property rather than Ohm’s general circuit law.
Michael Faraday: English scientist Michael Faraday made foundational discoveries in electromagnetism and electrochemistry. Faraday’s later electromagnetic research extended the circuit physics Ohm helped establish.
Electric current: Electric current is the rate at which electric charge passes through a surface. Current was the changing quantity Ohm sought to measure across circuit arrangements.
