Georg Wilhelm Steller

Georg Wilhelm Steller (1709–1746) was a German naturalist and physician who explored Alaska and the North Pacific on Vitus Bering’s 1741 expedition. His observations documented unfamiliar plants, animals, and Indigenous lifeways.

Steller's sea cow: An extinct herbivorous marine mammal once found in the Commander Islands and described by Steller in 1741. Steller documented this enormous animal during the expedition; hunting drove it to extinction within decades.
