George Cayley

George Cayley (1773–1857) was an English engineer who analyzed flight and built early heavier-than-air aircraft. He distinguished lift, thrust, and control, establishing principles that shaped modern aeronautics.

Lift (force): The aerodynamic force perpendicular to an aircraft’s direction of motion through the surrounding air. Cayley identified lift as a distinct force that a wing must generate to support flight.
Cayley’s glider of 1853: A man-carrying glider built by George Cayley and flown across a valley in Yorkshire in 1853. It put Cayley’s theories into practice in one of the earliest recorded manned glider flights.
Sir George Cayley: The name under which George Cayley was commonly titled; he was an English baronet, engineer, and aviation pioneer. This formal name appears frequently in historical accounts of his aeronautical work.
