George David Birkhoff

George David Birkhoff (1884–1944) was an American mathematician whose work shaped dynamical systems, differential equations, and ergodic theory. He proved the ergodic theorem now bearing his name.

Dynamical system: A system whose state changes over time according to a specified rule. Birkhoff studied long-term behavior in systems governed by repeated evolution.
Birkhoff's ergodic theorem: A theorem stating that time averages of integrable observables converge almost everywhere under measure-preserving transformations. This is Birkhoff’s signature result and the central link between orbit behavior and averages.
Three-body problem: The problem of predicting the motion of three mutually gravitating bodies from their initial states. Birkhoff’s dynamical-systems research included celestial mechanics and this classical problem.
Henri Poincaré: A French mathematician whose work founded major parts of topology, dynamical systems, and celestial mechanics. Poincaré’s qualitative dynamics and fixed-point ideas formed important precedents for Birkhoff.
