George Dewey

George Dewey (1837–1917) was a United States Navy admiral who commanded the U.S. Asiatic Squadron to victory at the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898.

Battle of Manila Bay: An 1898 naval battle in which the United States Asiatic Squadron destroyed Spain’s Pacific fleet in Manila Bay. Dewey’s victory there defined his career and became the Spanish–American War’s opening American triumph.
Rafael Montijo: A Spanish admiral who commanded the Pacific squadron defeated by Dewey at Manila Bay. Montijo led the opposing fleet during Dewey’s defining battle.
United States Naval Academy: A federal service academy in Annapolis, Maryland, that educates and commissions officers for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Dewey graduated from the academy in 1858 before beginning his naval career.
