George Eliot

George Eliot was the pen name of Mary Ann Evans (1819–1880), an English novelist whose fiction examined provincial life, moral choice, and social change.

Middlemarch: George Eliot’s 1871–72 novel follows intersecting lives in a fictional English town during the Reform era. Its interwoven plots and ethical scrutiny are the fullest expression of Eliot’s mature realism.
Mary Ann Evans: Mary Ann Evans was the birth name of George Eliot, the English novelist and essayist. Her change of name shaped how her fiction entered a literary culture that restricted women.
