George Ellery Hale

George Ellery Hale (1868–1938) was an American astronomer who founded major observatories and advanced solar physics, especially the study of magnetic fields in sunspots.

Mount Wilson Observatory: An astronomical observatory in California founded by George Ellery Hale and opened in 1904. Hale’s observatory became a leading center for solar and stellar research.
Zeeman effect: The splitting of spectral lines by a magnetic field. Hale used this spectral signature to detect magnetism in sunspots.
Solar astronomy: The branch of astronomy devoted to the Sun’s structure, activity, and evolution. Hale helped make the Sun a subject for modern astrophysical research.
