George Everest

George Everest (1790–1866) was a British surveyor and geographer who led the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India from 1830 to 1843. Mount Everest was named after him.

William Lambton: A British surveyor who founded the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India in 1802. Lambton began the survey Everest later led and extended.
Great Trigonometrical Survey: A nineteenth-century survey that measured the Indian subcontinent through triangulation and geodetic observations. It was the central undertaking Everest directed as Surveyor General.
Mount Everest: Earth’s highest mountain above sea level, on the border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. The mountain received Everest’s surname despite his having no role in its discovery or measurement.

Geodesy: The science of measuring Earth’s shape, orientation, gravity field, and changing positions on its surface. Everest’s survey contributed to geodesy by measuring long distances and Earth’s curvature.
