George F. Kennan

George F. Kennan was an American diplomat, historian, and strategist whose analysis of Soviet policy helped shape U.S. containment during the Cold War.

Long Telegram: George F. Kennan’s 1946 dispatch from Moscow analyzing Soviet conduct and recommending a firm, patient response. This dispatch first set out the analysis that became Kennan’s case for containment.
Political Warfare: The use of political, economic, informational, and other nonmilitary means to influence an adversary. Kennan favored sustained political pressure and influence over a primarily military response.
Charles Bohlen: An American diplomat and Soviet specialist who advised presidents and served as ambassador to the Soviet Union. Bohlen shared Kennan’s Soviet expertise but differed with him on aspects of policy.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization: A military alliance founded in 1949 by the United States, Canada, and Western European states. NATO became a durable institutional expression of the containment strategy Kennan helped inspire.

Truman Doctrine: The 1947 U.S. policy of supporting peoples resisting coercion by armed minorities or outside powers. Its broad pledge of support differed from Kennan’s more selective conception of containment.

Berlin Blockade: The Soviet Union’s 1948–1949 blockade of Western access to Berlin, countered by an Allied airlift. The airlift demonstrated a nonmilitary form of resistance to Soviet pressure in a key crisis.
Détente: A period or policy of reduced tension and improved relations between geopolitical rivals. Kennan supported accommodation with Moscow and criticized policies that foreclosed it.
