George Fitzhugh

George Fitzhugh (1806–1881) was an American social theorist who defended slavery and attacked free-market capitalism in writings published before the Civil War.

Proslavery ideology: A body of arguments that defended slavery as lawful, beneficial, or necessary. Fitzhugh gave this ideology an unusually explicit defense of slavery as social protection.
Sociology for the South: George Fitzhugh’s 1854 book arguing that Southern slavery offered a more stable social order than free society. It presents his central case that hierarchy and dependence could outperform individual freedom.
