George Gamow

George Gamow (1904–1968) was a theoretical physicist whose work helped establish modern accounts of radioactive decay, stellar nucleosynthesis, and the hot early universe.

Big Bang nucleosynthesis: The formation of light atomic nuclei during the first minutes of the universe. Gamow and collaborators developed an early quantitative account of how the hot universe could make light elements.
Nuclear astrophysics: The study of nuclear reactions and their role in astronomical objects and cosmic evolution. Gamow linked nuclear physics to the origin of elements in stars and the early universe.
Odessa: A major port city on the Black Sea, now in Ukraine. Gamow was born in Odessa in 1904 and studied physics there.
Mario Schenberg: A Brazilian theoretical physicist known for work in nuclear physics and astrophysics. Schenberg and Gamow proposed a neutrino-cooling process that helps explain the onset of rapid stellar collapse.
Geiger–Nuttall law: An empirical relation between an alpha emitter’s decay energy and its half-life. Gamow’s tunneling theory supplied a physical explanation for this observed relation.
Cosmic microwave background: The thermal radiation left from the early universe, now observed as a nearly uniform microwave glow. Gamow’s group predicted relic radiation from the hot early universe, although its discovery came later.
Quantum tunneling: A quantum effect that lets particles cross energy barriers they could not overcome classically. Gamow explained alpha decay through tunneling, accounting for the observed relation between decay energy and lifetime.
University of Leningrad: A Russian university founded in Saint Petersburg in 1724, later known as Leningrad State University. Gamow pursued graduate physics there under Alexander Friedmann’s former student Alexander Alexandrov.
Hans Bethe: A German-American physicist who explained the nuclear reactions that power stars. Bethe’s name appeared in the Alpher–Bethe–Gamow paper, despite not contributing to its research.
Proton–proton chain: A sequence of nuclear reactions that converts hydrogen into helium in Sun-like stars. Gamow and Edward Teller studied this chain as a source of stellar energy.
