George Grenville

George Grenville (1712–1770) was a British statesman and prime minister from 1763 to 1765. His government imposed new taxes on Britain’s American colonies, including the Stamp Act, provoking colonial resistance.

George III: King of Great Britain from 1760 to 1820, whose reign included the American Revolution. Grenville served as prime minister during the early years of George III’s reign.
Stamp Act 1765: A British law requiring many printed materials in the American colonies to carry a purchased tax stamp. This was Grenville’s most contested colonial tax and the immediate focus of organized resistance.
No taxation without representation: A political principle opposing taxation by a legislature in which the taxed population has no elected representatives. Colonists used this principle to reject Parliament’s authority to tax them directly.
Declaratory Act: A 1766 British law declaring Parliament’s authority to legislate for the American colonies in all cases. Passed alongside repeal, it asserted a principle Grenville’s tax program had made contentious.

Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham: British statesman who served as prime minister in 1765–1766 and repealed the Stamp Act. Rockingham succeeded Grenville and led the government that repealed the Stamp Act.
Seven Years' War: A global conflict fought from 1756 to 1763 among major European powers and their allies. Its costs and territorial aftermath formed the fiscal problem Grenville sought to address.
