George Grosz

George Grosz (1893–1959) was a German-American artist whose sharply satirical drawings and paintings portrayed political corruption, militarism, and urban life.

The Face of the Ruling Class: A 1921 portfolio of Grosz drawings satirizing German elites, militarists, and profiteers. Its caricatures make his attacks on Weimar-era power structures especially direct.
Caricature: A form of representation that exaggerates distinctive features to expose or ridicule a subject. Grosz distorted faces and bodies to make social roles look grotesque.
World War I: A global war fought from 1914 to 1918, centered on Europe and involving many of the world’s major powers. Military service and wartime upheaval intensified Grosz’s hostility to nationalism and militarism.
