George Peabody

George Peabody (1795–1869) was an American financier and philanthropist who made his fortune in London and funded educational and cultural institutions in the United States and Britain.

Peabody Institute: A Baltimore institution founded through Peabody’s philanthropy, comprising a conservatory of music and a public library. His 1857 gift founded this center for music and learning in Baltimore.
Endowment: A donated fund invested to generate income for an institution or continuing purpose. Peabody’s gifts often relied on invested capital to provide lasting support.
South Danvers, Massachusetts: The Massachusetts town now known as Peabody, where George Peabody was born. His birthplace was renamed in his honor after his death.
Junius Spencer Morgan: An American banker who partnered with George Peabody in the London firm that became J. S. Morgan & Co. Morgan joined his firm and later succeeded him in the business.
