George Pullman

George Pullman (1831–1897) was an American industrialist who founded the Pullman Palace Car Company and developed the company town of Pullman, Illinois.

Pullman Strike: A nationwide railroad strike in 1894 sparked by wage cuts and the refusal to lower rents in Pullman, Illinois. Workers’ resistance to his wage and rent policies turned a local dispute into a national crisis.
Pullman Palace Car Company: An American manufacturer and operator of railroad sleeping cars, founded by George Pullman in 1867. This was the enterprise through which Pullman developed and marketed his rail-car designs.
Chautauqua County, New York: A county in western New York where George Pullman was born in 1831. Pullman’s early life began in the region where his family worked in carpentry and construction.
Company town: A settlement in which one company owns or controls much of the housing and infrastructure used by its workers. Pullman’s development became one of the best-known examples of this model.
Pullman, Chicago: A planned industrial community on Chicago’s South Side, built for workers at the Pullman Palace Car Company. The company town made his vision of employer-provided housing concrete.

Model company town: A planned industrial settlement designed to provide workers with housing and services under employer oversight. Pullman presented his town as a managed alternative to unplanned industrial neighborhoods.
American Railway Union: A labor union founded in 1893 that organized railway workers across occupational lines. Its boycott of Pullman cars broadened the strike beyond the company’s own workforce.
Pioneer (railroad car): A Pullman sleeping car introduced in 1865, notable for its greater size and comfort than earlier cars. Its design helped establish the style of sleeping car that made Pullman famous.
