George Santayana

George Santayana (1863–1952) was a Spanish-American philosopher, essayist, poet, and novelist. His works joined naturalism, skepticism, and literary reflection, and include The Life of Reason and The Last Puritan.

Naturalism (philosophy): The philosophical view that reality is part of nature and is not explained by supernatural causes. Santayana treated mind, value, and spirit as developments within the natural world.
The Sense of Beauty: Santayana’s 1896 book arguing that beauty is a pleasure regarded as belonging to an object. It develops his naturalistic explanation of aesthetic judgment and value.
William James: An American philosopher and psychologist whose pragmatism and psychology shaped debates in the late nineteenth century. James taught Santayana at Harvard, where their philosophical differences developed alongside mutual respect.
Madrid: The capital city of Spain, where Santayana was born in 1863. His Spanish birth remained central to his sense of cultural identity.
The Life of Reason: Santayana’s five-volume philosophical work, published from 1905 to 1906, on reason in human life and culture. This series presents his account of how instinct and reflection shape rational conduct.
Reason in Religion: The second volume of The Life of Reason, examining religion as a human expression of imagination and social life. Santayana interprets religious traditions without treating their supernatural claims as literal knowledge.
Josiah Royce: An American idealist philosopher who taught at Harvard and debated realism, loyalty, and community. Royce was Santayana’s Harvard colleague and a leading foil to his naturalism.
Boston: The Massachusetts city where Santayana spent much of his childhood after moving from Spain. Boston became his formative American home and the setting of his education.
Skepticism: A philosophical approach that questions whether knowledge claims can be justified or certain. Santayana used skepticism to examine knowledge while retaining a naturalistic account of belief.
The Genteel Tradition in American Philosophy: Santayana’s 1911 essay criticizing the inherited idealism and moralism of American intellectual culture. The essay applies his naturalism to the limits of American academic philosophy.
