George Washington Bridge

The George Washington Bridge is a two-level suspension bridge spanning the Hudson River between Manhattan and Fort Lee, New Jersey. It carries Interstate 95 and U.S. Route 1/9 across one of the world’s busiest bridge crossings.

Suspension bridge: A bridge whose deck hangs from main cables supported by towers and anchored at both ends. Its main cables and suspenders carry the bridge decks across the Hudson.
Othmar Ammann: A Swiss-American civil engineer who designed several major New York City bridges. As chief engineer, he designed the bridge and its unusually long main span.
Interstate 95: A major north–south highway running along the eastern United States from Florida to Maine. I-95 crosses the Hudson on the bridge, linking New Jersey and Manhattan traffic routes.
Fort Lee: A borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, opposite Manhattan across the Hudson River. The bridge’s western approach begins in Fort Lee.
Cable-stayed bridge: A bridge whose deck is supported directly by cables running from towers. Its direct tower-to-deck cables differ from the GWB’s suspended decks.
Port of New York Authority: A public agency created in 1921 to coordinate transportation and infrastructure across New York and New Jersey. The agency developed and operated the bridge as a regional crossing.
U.S. Route 1/9: A signed highway concurrency of U.S. Routes 1 and 9 through New Jersey and New York. The paired routes use the bridge as a direct connection to Manhattan.
Washington Heights: A Manhattan neighborhood in northern New York City, overlooking the Hudson River. The bridge’s eastern approach meets Manhattan near this neighborhood.
Bridge tower: A vertical structure that supports bridge cables or a deck. The bridge’s steel towers carry its main cables above the river.
Hudson River crossing proposals: Plans developed over decades for fixed crossings between Manhattan and New Jersey. Earlier proposals established the need and political groundwork for a bridge.
