Georges-Eugène Haussmann

Georges-Eugène Haussmann was a French civil servant who directed Napoleon III’s extensive redevelopment of Paris from 1853 to 1870, reshaping its streets, parks, and infrastructure.

Boulevard: A broad urban street, often lined with trees and buildings. Haussmann’s straight, wide avenues became defining features of modern Paris.
Napoleon III: Emperor of the French from 1852 to 1870 and nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte. He commissioned and politically backed Haussmann’s transformation of Paris.
Jean-Charles Alphand: A French engineer and landscape designer who created parks and promenades in nineteenth-century Paris. Alphand implemented much of the green-space program associated with Haussmann’s Paris.

Victor Baltard: A French architect known for designing the central market halls of Les Halles in Paris. Baltard’s iron-and-glass market buildings were among the major civic works of Haussmann’s era.
Displacement (sociology): The forced or pressured movement of people from homes or communities by social or economic change. Demolitions and rising rents pushed many residents away from central Paris.
Bois de Boulogne: A large public park in western Paris, redesigned under Napoleon III. Haussmann’s program made this former royal forest a major public recreation space.
Expropriation: The compulsory transfer of private property to public authority, usually for a public purpose. The city used expropriation to acquire land for streets and other redevelopment projects.
