Georges-Louis Leclerc

Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, was an eighteenth-century French naturalist, mathematician, and author. His multivolume Histoire naturelle presented a sweeping account of the natural world and influenced debates about Earth, species, and human origins.

Histoire naturelle: A multivolume natural history by Buffon and collaborators, published from 1749 onward. This is the work through which Buffon’s account of nature reached its widest audience.
Buffon's law of biogeography: Buffon’s observation that related animals on different continents can differ more than animals in similar climates on one continent. It expresses his claim that geographic separation and environmental conditions shape animal differences.
Louis Jean-Marie Daubenton: A French naturalist and anatomist who collaborated with Buffon on descriptions of animals in Histoire naturelle. Daubenton supplied detailed anatomical work for the early volumes of Buffon’s project.
Royal Society: A British scientific society founded in 1660 to promote investigation of the natural world. Buffon became a fellow after early work in mathematics and experimental science attracted notice abroad.
Georges Cuvier: A French naturalist who founded comparative anatomy and established extinction as a scientific fact. Cuvier later rejected Buffon’s transformist suggestions while building a different natural history.

Pierre Louis Maupertuis: A French mathematician and astronomer who led the expedition measuring a meridian arc in Lapland. Maupertuis’s work in mathematics and natural philosophy belonged to the same Parisian scientific world.
Newtonianism: The body of scientific ideas derived from Isaac Newton’s physics and mathematical methods. Buffon’s early mathematical writing engaged with Newtonian methods before his major natural-history work.
Jean-Baptiste Lamarck: A French naturalist who proposed an early theory of species transformation through use, disuse, and inheritance. Lamarck developed evolutionary ideas amid debates Buffon had helped open.
Climate: The long-term pattern of atmospheric conditions in a region. Buffon used climate to explain why organisms and human populations differed across regions.
