Georges Méliès

Georges Méliès (1861–1938) was a French filmmaker, stage magician, and theater owner who pioneered cinematic special effects and imaginative narrative films.

Substitution splice: An early film trick in which a camera stop and restart makes an object or person appear to change suddenly. Méliès famously used this accidental discovery to make characters and objects vanish or transform.
Robert-Houdin Theatre: A Paris theater devoted to magic performances, founded by Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin. Méliès bought and ran this theater, where stage illusions shaped his approach to filmmaking.
A Trip to the Moon: A 1902 French science-fiction film in which astronomers travel to the Moon and encounter its inhabitants. Its lunar expedition and iconic rocket image became the best-known example of Méliès's cinematic fantasy.
