Georgian Golden Age

A period of political power, territorial expansion, and cultural flourishing in the medieval Kingdom of Georgia, chiefly spanning the 11th through 13th centuries.

David IV of Georgia: King of Georgia from 1089 to 1125, known for consolidating royal power and defeating the Seljuk Turks at Didgori. His reforms and victories laid the foundations for Georgia’s rise.
Gelati Monastery: A monastic complex near Kutaisi, founded by King David IV in the early 12th century and renowned for its mosaics and frescoes. Its church, academy, and royal patronage embody the era’s religious and intellectual ambitions.
Battle of Didgori: A 1121 battle in which King David IV’s forces defeated a Seljuk-led coalition near Tbilisi. The victory opened the way for Georgian control of Tbilisi.

Vardzia: A rock-hewn monastic complex in southern Georgia, expanded under Queen Tamar in the 12th century. Its scale and construction reflect the resources and confidence of Tamar’s reign.
Siege of Tbilisi (1122): The 1122 campaign in which David IV captured Tbilisi from Muslim rule and made it Georgia’s capital. Taking the city brought a major political and commercial center under royal authority.
Battle of Garni: A 1225 battle in which Khwarazmian forces defeated a Georgian army near Garni in Armenia. The defeat exposed the kingdom’s vulnerability amid successive invasions.
George III of Georgia: King of Georgia from 1156 to 1184, whose reign strengthened royal authority and expanded Georgian influence. His reign prepared the succession of his daughter Tamar.
The Knight in the Panther's Skin: A medieval Georgian epic poem by Shota Rustaveli, composed around the turn of the 13th century. The poem gives the period a landmark literary work and an enduring ethical ideal.
