Gerard Kuiper

Gerard Kuiper (1905–1973) was a Dutch-American astronomer who studied planetary atmospheres and the Solar System, and discovered Uranus’s moon Miranda and Neptune’s moon Nereid.

Miranda (moon): Miranda is an inner moon of Uranus, discovered by Gerard Kuiper in 1948. Kuiper discovered this Uranian moon while examining photographic plates.
Ernst Öpik: Ernst Öpik was an Estonian astronomer known for work on stars, meteors, and the Solar System. Öpik’s early proposal of a distant comet reservoir anticipated ideas later associated with Kuiper.
Planetary science: Planetary science studies planets, moons, planetary systems, and the physical processes shaping them. Kuiper’s research helped establish this broad field as a modern discipline.
Kuiper belt: The Kuiper belt is a region beyond Neptune containing many small icy bodies and dwarf planets. The region was named for Kuiper, although he did not predict it in the modern sense.
Nereid: Nereid is a distant, irregular moon of Neptune, discovered by Gerard Kuiper in 1949. Kuiper found Neptune’s second known moon during a photographic search.
Fred Whipple: Fred Whipple was an American astronomer whose icy-conglomerate model explained comet nuclei. Whipple developed a competing account of comet structure during Kuiper’s era.
Infrared astronomy: Infrared astronomy studies celestial objects by detecting radiation at wavelengths longer than visible light. Kuiper used infrared observations to investigate planetary atmospheres and surfaces.
Lunar and Planetary Laboratory: The Lunar and Planetary Laboratory is a research center at the University of Arizona founded by Gerard Kuiper in 1960. Kuiper created this institution to center research and training on the Solar System.
Titan (moon): Titan is Saturn’s largest moon and the only moon with a dense atmosphere. Kuiper identified methane in Titan’s atmosphere through spectroscopic observations.
Carl Sagan: Carl Sagan was an American astronomer and science communicator who studied planetary atmospheres and extraterrestrial life. Sagan trained under Kuiper and carried planetary science into a later generation.
