Gerard Manley Hopkins

Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844–1889) was an English Jesuit priest and poet whose sprung rhythm, compressed language, and vivid imagery reshaped Victorian poetry.

Sprung rhythm: A poetic meter Hopkins developed, counting stressed syllables while allowing variable numbers of unstressed syllables. Hopkins used this meter to capture speech rhythms and energetic movement.
