Gerard ’t Hooft

Gerard ’t Hooft is a Dutch theoretical physicist whose work on renormalization and gauge theories helped establish the mathematical foundations of the Standard Model.

Quantum field theory: A framework that describes particles and their interactions using quantum fields. ’t Hooft’s key results made interacting quantum field theories mathematically manageable.
Yang–Mills theory: A non-Abelian gauge theory in which gauge fields carry the charges associated with their symmetry group. ’t Hooft proved that spontaneously broken Yang–Mills theories are renormalizable.
Martinus Veltman: A Dutch theoretical physicist who developed methods for calculating in quantum field theory. Veltman supervised ’t Hooft and collaborated with him on renormalization.
W and Z bosons: The massive gauge bosons that mediate the weak interaction. Their predicted properties could be calculated consistently within the renormalized electroweak theory.

Renormalization: A procedure for relating parameters in a theory to measurable quantities while controlling infinities. His calculations showed how to renormalize non-Abelian gauge theories.
Ward–Takahashi identity: A relation among quantum-field-theory correlation functions that follows from a continuous symmetry. Identities of this kind constrain gauge-theory calculations and their renormalization.
