Gerardus Mercator

Gerardus Mercator (1512–1594) was a Flemish cartographer, geographer, and instrument maker whose 1569 world map introduced the projection now named for him.

Map projection: A systematic transformation of locations on a curved surface into positions on a flat map. Mercator’s best-known contribution is a specific projection for mapping Earth.
Mercator projection: A cylindrical map projection that preserves local angles while enlarging areas toward the poles. It is the cartographic method most closely associated with Mercator.
Renaissance cartography: European mapmaking during the Renaissance, shaped by renewed classical learning, exploration, and printing. Mercator’s work belongs to a period of rapid change in European geographic knowledge.
Nautical navigation: The planning and conduct of travel by water using charts, instruments, and geographic observations. Mercator’s projection makes constant-bearing courses easy to plot as straight lines.
Map–territory relation: The philosophical distinction between a representation and the reality it represents. Mercator’s projection shows how a useful map necessarily transforms geographic reality.
Rhumb line: A path across Earth’s surface that crosses every meridian at the same angle. The 1569 map made constant-compass-bearing routes straight lines.
Conformal map projection: A map projection that preserves angles and local shapes, but not necessarily distances or areas. Mercator’s projection is conformal, which supports its use for navigation.
Leuven: A historic city in present-day Belgium and a major center of learning in the Low Countries. Mercator studied and established himself as a maker of maps and instruments there.
Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system: A global grid system that divides Earth into zones and uses transverse Mercator projections for coordinates. This widely used coordinate system descends from a projection in the Mercator family.
Arno Peters: A German historian who promoted an equal-area world map projection in the twentieth century. Peters made Mercator’s area distortion central to a public argument about world maps.
