Gerhart Hauptmann

Gerhart Hauptmann (1862–1946) was a German playwright and novelist whose naturalist dramas, especially The Weavers, helped reshape modern German theatre. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1912.

The Weavers: Gerhart Hauptmann’s 1892 drama depicts the 1844 Silesian weavers’ uprising through the lives of workers and their families. This landmark play brought Hauptmann international recognition for portraying collective working-class struggle.
