German Bight

The southeastern part of the North Sea, bordered by the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, and the Wadden Sea islands. It includes a broad, shallow coastal shelf and major estuaries.

North Sea: A marginal sea of the northeastern Atlantic, bordered by Great Britain, Scandinavia, and continental northwestern Europe. The German Bight is the North Sea’s southeastern sector.
Tide: The periodic rise and fall of sea level caused mainly by the gravitational effects of the Moon and Sun. Tidal range and timing govern water movement across the Bight’s shallow coast.
Port of Hamburg: A major German seaport on the lower Elbe, connected to the North Sea by a navigable estuary. Its seaward shipping route crosses the eastern German Bight.
Heligoland Bight battle: A naval battle fought in the German Bight on 28 August 1914 between British and German forces. The battle made the Bight an early naval theater of the First World War.
Sea level rise: A long-term increase in the average level of the world’s oceans. Rising seas may increase flood pressure on the Bight’s low-lying shores.
Wadden Sea: A tidal coastal wetland of mudflats, salt marshes, and barrier islands along the southeastern North Sea. Its islands form much of the German Bight’s seaward coastal boundary.
Tidal current: A water current generated by the periodic rise and fall of tides. Strong tidal currents redistribute water and sediment through the Bight’s channels.
Port of Rotterdam: A major Dutch seaport on the Rhine–Meuse delta and one of Europe’s principal freight gateways. Its approaches lie along the Bight’s southwestern maritime corridor.
Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park: A protected area covering the Lower Saxon portion of the Wadden Sea along Germany’s North Sea coast. It protects tidal habitats along the Bight’s southeastern shore.
North Sea ecosystem: The interacting organisms and physical environments of the North Sea and its coastal habitats. The Bight’s ecological changes are part of wider North Sea trends.
